Weighing In: The ‘Evil Dead’ Remake Trailer

Posted in Horror, Trailer Park on October 24th, 2012 by Nick

The Horror community was filled with shock and terror when rumors about an Evil Dead remake started to float around the Internet a few years back. Should this movie even be touched if not for a proper sequel? Would Bruce Campbell or Sam Raimi be involved? Would it be modernized as torture porn or keep its campy heart? When Campbell and Raimi did announce that they’d be attached to the project as producers, some fears were calmed, but many worries still lingered. Today, we finally got to take a first look at one of Horror’s most anticipated remakes:

Gut reactions: It looks gruesome and bloody (pro!), but I’m not sure if it looks “fun” enough (con). It definitely seems to have an intensity behind it, like when Rob Zombie took over the Halloween remake series, but I’m still a little unsure. Some of the scenes seem a little torture-porn-y, but it does look scary and gory, which are both so necessary for this remake to be successful.

Because I’m a huge 80′s horror/slasher fan, I love my Horror to be campy with a healthy side of cheese, which really just explains my love for the original series (and for movies like Cabin in the Woods!). Understandably, this movie can’t be the same movie, so they needed to alter the tone of this new entry. All I ask and hope for is that there’s a solid story behind the bloodshed, with characters we can really get behind and root for. Diablo Cody has reportedly “polished” the script, adding in some additional character and dialogue, so hopefully her charm and wit can be a great addition to what looks like a hellishly frightening film.

Who’s excited? Who’s still screaming in outrage? Sound off!

Megan's body, way better than 'Jennifer's'

Posted in Movies on September 22nd, 2009 by Nick

I’m saddened to report back re: Diablo Cody’s latest horror-lite fare – I’m slightly disappointed. Though Megan (and Amanda too!) is easy on the eyes, even Megan’s body couldn’t fully save what should have been a riskier, scarier, and waaay more campy film.

Jennifer is your classic high school bitch kept in check by her dorkier, down to earth BFF Needy (Seyfried). Friends since the sandbox, the girls go out to the only bar in their small town of Devil’s Kettle, which as it turns out isn’t just a clever name!  They check out a band, Low Shoulder, who then proceed to offer Jennifer’s body to Satan in order to sell their souls for fame.

That’s ‘Jennifer’s Body’ in a nutshell. It had a great cast (‘Veronica Mars’ alum Kyle Gallner and Adam Brody support), and a brilliant premise that I was banking Cody to bring home. It just didn’t go where I was expecting. We’ve all seen the trailer! Look at the awesome potential! :

Bloody. Disgusting. Kinda creepy. But ‘Jennifer’s Body’ stopped at “kinda” in more ways than one. The movie failed to go that extra mile necessary for Camp Gold. You’ve already got a campy story, why not run with it! The references/Diablo-dialogue was there, but even that could’ve been more excessive. Why hold back? Why not show Jennifer in full beastie form? Why not show more blood and carnage? The movie already had the R rating and definitely should’ve pushed the envelope more instead of simply relying on Megan Fox to fill seats.

I didn’t hate it, but a DVD viewing could’ve totally sufficed.

Sorry, Diablo. I still love you though.

Holy reference, Batman!

I’m behind on Diablo Cody’s “United States of Tara,” but something caught my ear while watching the third episode.

Tara mentioned “the robot girl from Small Wonder.” Obscure references. Love ‘em.

WHAT A REFERENCE! Someone even remembers this damn show! Well, done Diablo!

P.S. – I’m still loving “Tara.” If you aren’t watching it, you’re missing out!

*EDIT* “Tara” has already been renewed for a second season! Awesome.

Put this on your radar: 'United States of Tara' starts Sunday

Posted in TV on January 16th, 2009 by Nick

Exec-Produced by Steven Spielberg and penned by Diablo Cody. Starring Toni Collette. Are ya sold yet? Do I even need to say anymore?

Well, I will anyways. Here’s the description from Showtime:

“Between juggling family, career and her ever-altering personalities, Tara Gregson never knows what, or who, to expect. She’s got ‘T’, the wild-living teenager, ‘Buck’, the rough and tumble biker dude, and ‘Alice’, the type-A homemaker, all ready to take their turn. Her life isn’t easy, but with the warmth, humor, and support of a family that loves her just the way she is – no matter who she is – Tara’s doing alright.”

The series begins this Sunday, Jan. 18th, at 10pm on Showtime. You can also watch the pilot now on SHO.com!

Sounds promising, though.
