When Renting Legally Just Doesn’t Pay Off

It’s true! The last person on earth who hasn’t seen Bridesmaids finally did so! (Worth the hype, I say!) But dammit – I have a gripe. It’s no secret that studios have been stripping down rental discs so that renters can only view the feature film and change the languages and such. But dammit, can I just stress how annoying that is? It’s a true slap in the face to the consumer.

I Netflix’d a Blu-ray copy of Bridesmaids and didn’t even notice that there was an Unrated version until after the movie ended. DOH! However, this particular Blu-ray had the Special Features section, so I wanted to check out some stuffs. I clicked on the Gag Reel (which I’m sure would’ve been so money) only to be slapped with the above screen shot. If you’re going to block me from all the goodies, why even display them as an option on the disc? That’s pretty lame. I knew that the Featurette and Deleted Scenes were also out of the question, so I didn’t even bother. Whatever.

My gripe truly took form when I tried to switch over to the Unrated version so that I could check out the five additional minutes of footage that I didn’t get to see. AND BAM! Blocked again! I can almost understand holding out on the extra features as incentive for people to buy a copy/drive sales, but now I can’t even access the Unrated version of the movie!? That’s a little extreme Universal Studios, Relativity Media, Apatow Productions, or whoever-the-fuck-is-to-blame.  I call shenanigans! I wouldn’t be surprised if this has a counter effect of driving more people to illegal download the Unrated versions of films that they can’t even LEGALLY PAY to see. Do studios really have to be this stingy?

That said, Jon Hamm is a badass. But we already knew that, didn’t we?
