The Decemberists Announce World Tour and New Album

DecemberistsIt’s been three years since The Decemberists have toured, but starting in February, the Colin Meloy-led band will hit the road for a string of dates that will carry them through April. The Portland-based indie rock/folk five-piece will be supporting their new album, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, out Jan. 20 on Capitol. The lead single, “Make You Better,” is out now on Spotify and the Interweb, at large.

Tickets for the U.S. dates go on sale to the general public on Nov. 21 (that’s this Friday, kids), with a fan pre-sale starting on Nov. 19 on the band’s website.

The band also announced a limited edition Black Friday 7’’ vinyl release for Record Store Day. The 7” will come in a matte sleeve with artwork designed by Carson Ellis and features “Make You Better” with an exclusive B-side “Fits And Starts” that can only be found on the 7’’.

Sonically, the group describes What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World as their “most varied and dynamic work yet,” coming three years after 2011’s The King is Dead. In a release, the band states that “tracks like ‘Cavalry Captain’ and ‘Carolina Low’ are exemplary of the strong narrative thrust that has characterized much of The Decemberists’ work, but reflect an increased subtlety and even a bit of levity.” Other tracks such as “Make You Better” and “12/17/12,” meanwhile, reflect a more personal side of lead singer/songwriter Colin Meloy. “12/17/12” in particular is a song that Melow wrote after watching President Obama address the nation following the Newtown school shootings, and also provides the lyrics used for the album’s title.
