I think my brain is still doing somersaults after last night’s premiere of American Horror Story: Hotel. The super-sized episode had creepy children, blood sucking, demonic anal rape, torn out eyeballs, gutted entrails, pervasive drug use, and yes, one of the bloodiest orgy scenes ever filmed.
As we were introduced to Lady Gaga’s villainous…whatever-she-is…we witnessed The Countess and her male-equivalent Donovan (played by Matt Bomer) courting another attractive looking couple at an outdoor screening of Nosferatu. They allure the couple back to Hotel Cortez for some steamy sexing, but since this is American Horror Story, it obviously turns into a gnarly bloodbath.
The cinematography was gorgeous, and kudos to the creators for giving the scene time to breathe. The horror of it all is almost second fiddle to the other happenings around it. We’re hypnotized by sex (and by wondering how the hell this even aired on TV) to even begin to guess just how badly it was going to end for the rando couple from the park. It was visually stunning and stimulating, but the real perfection was the song choice.
From the band She Wants Revenge, off their 2006 self-titled album, “Tear You Apart” both counterbalanced and accentuated the bold visuals of passion, lust, and later, bloodshed that was flashing across our screens. It provided the perfect gothic-rock accompaniment to the quite enthralling mise-en-scène of The Countess’ penthouse. It’s the perfect example of how one piece of art, the music, can elevate art in another form. AHS music supervisor – well done!
Did you enjoy your first night at Hotel Cortez? (I seriously need to watch it again.) Listen to this song on repeat to hold you over until next Wednesday.
