Singer-songwriter Andrew Bird hosts a series on his Facebook page called “Live from the Great Room.” That “great room” – why, it’s his very own living room! He invites guests, they ditch footwear, they hop to it. Former guests have included John C. Reilly, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, and The National’s Matt Berninger, among others. For the most recent installment, he invited the passionate fireball Fiona Apple, with whom he cut the duet “Left Handed Kisses” off his latest record Are You Serious.
The mini 30-minutes set features Bird and Apple originals as well as the debut of a brand new song, “Railroad Sam and Slingshot Sue,” which was co-written with Apple and a five-year-old boy named Sam. (When a five-year-old is already cooler than you. DAMMIT.)
Can’t say Bird is a fave of mine, but everything Fiona Apple touches is emotive, magical displays of auditory wonderment…so today, he’s A. O. K. in my book!
Check out the performance below to hear Apple’s “Werewolf,” Bird’s “Why,” a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Oh, Sister,” and more.
