Here Are All the Bands Featured in the New ‘Twin Peaks’ Season

Buffy had The Bronze. Beverly Hills, 90210 had The Peach Pit After Dark. And Showtime’s new Twin Peaks revival now has the Bang Bang Bar.

Mastermind and co-creator David Lynch ended 4 out of 5 of the new Twin Peaks episodes with band showcases that preceded the end credits. For a show that usually has such a strong Angelo Badalamenti presence, this is both surprising and not. On one hand, it’s shocking and a little disheartening that Badalamenti’s beautiful, chilling, emotional scores aren’t being utilized more (though I’m sure Lynch is biding his time…he’s been slowly sprinkling in all the characters and musical arrangements die-hards are hungry for). With Badalamenti chillin’ on the back burner, Lynch is open to explore music in a different way—and he chose to play us out each week with choice indie acts and up-and-comers rockin’ the Roadhouse stage.

Wondering which bands we’ve seen so far and where/how you can find them? Wonder no more.

*This post will be periodically updated as the season progresses.*

Episode 10: Rebekah del Rio – “No Stars”

Rebekah del Rio can be remembered from her cameo in Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, but it’s likely her beautiful vocals that stayed with you. (del Rio was also featured in Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales, a film I wouldn’t recommend to my worst enemy, despite liking aspects of it myself) This time, del Rio brought all the feels to the Roadhouse with a song co-written by Lynch. And a Black Lodge–inspired dress? Well, I’ll be damned!

Episode 9: Au Revoir Simone – “A Violent Yet Flammable World”

The second appearance by the Brooklyn-based key enthusiasts, the trio played another cut off of 2007’s The Bird of Music.

Episode 8: Nine Inch Nails – “She’s Gone Away”

Episode 8 was an utter mindfuck, even for a show like Twin Peaks, and that sure as hell is saying something. (The first atomic bomb? All that static? The Giant? The floating? Lynch once again out-Lynched himself.) Seminal industrial rockers Nine Inch Nails, led by Lynch’s pal Trent Reznor, got nutty with their aggressive, strobe-light focused performance of “She’s Gone Away.” It was the perfect song by the perfect artist to play at the top of the episode, kicking our asses straight down the rabbit hole that was the eighth installment. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into.

Episode 6: Sharon Van Etten – “Tarifa”

A longtime friend of Lynch’s, Sharon Van Etten hit the Bang Bang Bar in episode six with “Tarifa,” a Mazzy Star-esque slow jam with impeccably lulling vocals. Find the original track on her 2014 album Are We There.

Sharon Van Etten – Tarifa (Twin Peaks 2017)

Episode 5: Trouble – “Snake Eyes”

For bands out there wondering how to grace the Twin Peaks stage: well, just start a band with Lynch’s son. Trouble is a collaboration between Alex Zhang Hangtai (formerly of Dirty Beaches/Last Lizard), Riley Lynch (on guitar) and drummer Dean Hurley, Lynch’s longtime music supervisor. Hangtai plays the tenor sax on the noir cut “Snake Eyes,” which the band plays as the show introduces the character of Richard Horne. I originally thought this was a mock-band, made up simply to nail the vibe of the episode’s ending, but Trouble’s 7″ EP arrives June 30 via Sacred Bones Records. A second track, “Mother’s Gone,” has also been released digitally. Check them out here:

Episode 4: Au Revoir Simone – “Lark”

Brooklyn’s Au Revoir Simone brought their elegant dream pop to Twin Peaks at the culmination of episode 4, with Erika Forster, Annie Hart and Heather D’Angelo sharing the keys in their trance-y electronic ditty “Lark.” The track is off the band’s 2007 album, The Bird of Music.

Episode 3: The Cactus Blossoms – “Mississippi”

This duo of brothers from Minneapolis brought their damn good single “Mississippi” to the Roadhouse, channeling a blend of classic country western with their modern folk lean. The Cactus Blossoms (Jack Torrey and Page Burkum) also brought the track to a World Cafe session last year. Find “Mississippi” on their album, “You’re Dreaming.”

Episode 2: Chromatics – “Shadow”

Formed in Portland, Ore. in 2001, Chromatics is made up of vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Ruth Radelet, Adam Miller, Nat Walker, and Johnny Jewel. These guys got their foot in the door thanks to Jewel, who’s also a music producer on the show. “Shadow” is dreamy and lulling…but don’t get too cozy; this is Twin Peaks, after all.

Hungry for more? Chromatics’ Jewel has just what you need—a Spotify playlist mixing the new cuts with the original Badalamenti scores. Vinyl purists can expect an official soundtrack release the week of September 8, right after the season finishes its run.

I don’t wish Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me upon my worst enemy, but goddammit, that “Pink Room” cut is the hotness.
