In a recent interview with HuffPost Live, Ben & Jerry’s founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield hinted that they’d be open to a higher level of experimentation in the future, should the law allow it. The duo hinted that should the legal hurdles be knocked down, the company would consider making a cannabis-infused ice cream.
“Makes sense to me,” said Cohen. “Combine your pleasures.”
Greenfield seemed a little more hesitant but didn’t totally rule it out.
“Ben and I have had previous experiences with substances, and I think legalizing marijuana is a wonderful thing,” he said. “It’s not my decision. If it were my decision, I’d be doing it, but fortunately we have wiser heads at the company that figure those things out.”
So full disclosure: this discussion was one blip of an idea in one single interview. But hey – is it as crazy as it sounds? Ben & Jerry’s is known for being socially progressive. They’ve removed all GMOs in their ingredients and do their best to keep their cows “happy.” If any company was to choose a side on the legalization debate, it makes sense that these Vermonters would take charge.
As of now, marijuana is legal for medicinal and recreational use in Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska. Many other states have legalized it for medicinal purposes alone. Could Ben & Jerry’s actually have a cannabis ice cream available for sale in states that have legalized? Why not, right? As more and more states start to legalize, there’s no question that big business is going to want to cash in. Making green from green, people!
I wonder what flavors those masterminds could come up with. Caramel Cannabis? Rocky Roach? Peanut Bud er Swirl? Cannabiscotti & Cream?
The possibilities are endless.
