Ben Folds, Amanda Palmer and Damian Kulash are attempting a massive feat: On April 25, the three musicians, along with author Neil Gaiman, are joining forces to write and record eight songs in eight hours. The motley crew will work on the tunes at the Berklee College of Music from 4 p.m. until midnight, releasing the newly written album a mere 10 hours later during ReThink Music, a music conference being held in Boston.
The band’s creative process will be broadcast live from the studio at Rethink-Music.com, while the album will be released via Bandcamp.com. On April 26, the group will present the project along with a live performance for conference attendees. No pressure, right?
“Can the album cycle actually be reduced to a single day?” OK Go’s Damian Kulash asks. “If the recording industry is supposed to be a means of connecting musicians to music listeners, well, then, here it is — spontaneous and circular. They send us ideas and a day later we have an album, a show, and some semblance of a documentary. And then the next day (we hope), a big public flameout and a battle over rights and the release of competing slanderous autobiographies.”
Proceeds from the first week of downloads will benefit Berklee City Music, an organization that provides free music education to underserved teens.
Is this a good idea? Will the cuts turn out to be uninspired? Lazy? Lacking? I’m not sure how these four are going to pull it off, but dammit, what an exciting venture–not just for Folds, Palmer, Kulash and Gaiman–but for music fans everywhere as well.
Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors!!! I wish you would have told me about this sooner. But I guess it’s my own fault for not reading your blog every day.
