If you’re gonna name a new track “Fire,” you’ve really gotta deliver the goods. Luckily for Beth Ditto, the former Gossip singer, this one is all the fire emojis.
The lead single off Ditto’s upcoming solo debut Fake Sugar, “Fire” is everything that Gossip was built upon: powerful feminist vocals and slow-building grooves that slap you across the face before you can even crash the party. (Hear it below.)
It’s been five years since Gossip’s last and final album, A Joyful Noise. In 2011, Ditto released her clubby four-track Beth Ditto EP, but has only made guest appearances since, including supporting vocals on Blondie’s “A Ghost By Any Name.” Ditto also penned a memoir and started her own fashion line (a prerequisite for pop stardom, these days).
