Have you ever met anyone who didn’t love Len’s “Steal My Sunshine,” as a guilty pleasure or otherwise? Me neither. It’s a universally accepted truth that the 90’s pop ditty is the musical equivalent of a warm, sunny, beer-soaked Californian day.
Brooklyn-based bubblegrunge quartet Charly Bliss covered the tune for The AV Club’s AV Undercover, a rad series I post about often. The AV Club makes a list of 25 songs and 25 bands choose a song to cover from the list, which dwindles as time goes on. Lots of beautiful, off-genre covers then appear on the internetz. Magic is made.
The cheeriness of Len was perfect for Bliss’ fuzzy 90’s pop-rock. Stay till the end to hear the band kick up the energy on the track’s bouncy, laid back vibes. (It’s all about that ending.)
Charly Bliss finds its perfect match with Len’s “Steal My Sunshine”
There was no contest when Charly Bliss was picking a song to cover from our 25-song list: The power-pop four-piece knew as soon as it saw Len’s one-hit wonder “Steal My Sunshine” on the remaining list.
Spoiler alert: Charly Bliss’ Guppy is probably making my year-end list.
