This clown certainly has nothing to be glum about.
This year, Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett is releasing the follow up to 2013’s The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas. What will technically be her debut album, I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit will be available worldwide March 23.
The new single, “Pedestrian At Best” is more of what we’ve come to love from Barnett: spoken-word-singing brewed up with catchy hooks and melodic riffs.
There’s a classic feel to Barnett’s playing – her structure is modern, but the feel of what she does has an inherently wise spirit. In the track’s chorus, she honestly warns listeners:
“Put me on a pedestal and I’ll only disappoint you / Tell me I’m exceptional, I promise to exploit you / Give me all your money, and I’ll make some origami, honey / I think you’re a joke, but I don’t find you very funny.”
Though her vocals may be an acquired taste to some, her style is certainly her own. She admits: “My internal monologue is saturated analogue” and “I wanna wash out my head with turpentine and cyanide, I dislike this internal diatribe.”
Lucky for her…we don’t.
