Fiona Apple could drown a basket of puppies or club a sea of baby seals, and she would still be doing no wrong. I certainly hope she wouldn’t; I just mean that Fiona Apple is majorly mega, you guys. Hell, she even gets away with wearing squid hats, because art. (It was for a video – she’s not going all Gaga or anything.)
The introverted singer-songwriter has brought her haunting croon to Showtime, recording a brand new composition for the intro theme to The Affair, a new series starring Dominic West (The Wire) and Ruth Wilson (Luther), as well as Maura Tierney (ER) and Joshua Jackson (Fringe). Since Apple is a bird who only comes out to sing every once in a while, any new Fiona that reaches our needy ears is a reason to celebrate.
The track “Container” was written by Apple and produced by her frequent band mate and collaborator Blake Mills. It follows the theme of the show, which details “the emotional and psychological effects of an extramarital affair…told separately from the male and female perspectives.”
To sum: Fiona Apple > anything else you listened to today > us
And as any Apple fan knows, her lyrics are powerful and cut deep. Hear/read below:
“Container”
I was screaming into the canyon
At the moment of my death
The echo I created
Outlasted my last breath
My voice it made an avalanche
And buried a man I never knew
And when he died his widowed bride
Met your daddy and they made you
[Hook:] 3x
I have only one thing to do and that’s
To be the wave that I am and then
Sink back into the ocean
Sink back into the o-
Sink back into the ocean
