Heads up, cheesecake loving confidants. Coming soon to New York’s Washington Heights ‘hood: a Golden Girls-themed café!
Michael J. Larue, a friend of the late Rue McClanahan, plans to open up shop in September, and as a special tribute to McClanahan, will name his new creation Rue La Rue Café.
McClanahan played the saucy southern belle Blanche Devereaux, whose joie de vivre was a stark contrast to her friends and roommates Rose, Dorothy and Sophia. (AS IF THAT EVEN NEEDED MENTION.) Betty White reportedly plans to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony…so basically, it’ll be mobbed and don’t even try.
The menu will feature soups, wraps, salads, desserts, baked treats and wine, so you can sit around squawking with three of your besties about your latest one-night-stand, too!
“When [McClanahan] died [in 2010], I inherited all her personal belongings and show business memorabilia,” says LaRue, who was the executor of the actress’ estate. “I believe I can turn this place into a mini-tourist [hub] in Washington Heights.”
LaRue also said he plans to have McClanahan’s piano on hand for live music.
In addition to many of McClanahan’s personal artifacts, Rue La Rue will reportedly sell its own Golden Girls merchandise (with permission from Disney, of course). No word on exactly what kinds of tchotchkes will be sold, but I’m sure we all know what the most popular dessert item will be.
