In October, Gwen Stefani released the first of her comeback singles, “Baby Don’t Lie” to mega fan-fare and high expectations. The results were a mixed bag, with a safe, radio-friendly tune, so-so vocals and loads of repetition in the song’s three-minute run. The Voice coach (and No Doubt frontwoman – and don’t you forget that!) is back with a second single which is already better than the first because PHARRELL.
Stefani and Pharrell first worked together when The Neptunes helped write No Doubt’s “Hella Good” track off the Rock Steady album. They later made a little song together that you may have heard called “Hollaback Girl.” Safe to say, these two together usually equals gold.
For her second and new solo single “Spark the Fire,” Stefani and Pharrell have created a very good soundtrack for this video full of Adventure Time-esque cartoons, hip-hop dancers and Japanese emojis. The visuals overload your senses, and not in a bad way. Gwen rides a cloud and lands in her cartoon world. Emojis and texts fly out of her mouth and float all over the screen. There’s bouncing and rapping and exploding, shimmery, sparkly goodness. It’s a fun time.
The song is a solid pop track that blends in hip-hop elements. It’s got attitude and edge (noticeably M.I.A. in “Baby Don’t Lie”), but not quite as much as “Hollaback Girl.” The major criticism of “Spark” is that once again, Stefani’s ditty treads in repetition. Her “Who got the lighter? Let’s Spark the Fire!” gets to a point where it’s like, “SOMEONE GIVE THIS WOMAN A FUCKING LIGHTER ALREADY!” Unlike “Hollaback’s” killer “B.A.N.A.N.A.S.” bridge-breakdown, “Spark” could’ve benefited from a similar-yet-totally-different third act to make it POP a little more. That said, this party tune still makes me want to get drunk and dance. It’s banana-lite – I deem it an S.U.C.C.E.S.S.
