It’s been four years since Incubus released its last album, the extremely lackluster If Not Now, When? (Seriously, what a snoozefest. I’ve tried to go back and all listens have been unsuccessful. Shame.) But earlier this month, the band released a new single, “Absolution Calling,” and all is right in the world again.
Boyd and the boys plan on releasing two EP’s this year, starting with Trust Fall (Side A) on March 24. The single starts with a very Muse-like intro of sonic synths and sounds. A steady, accompanying bass line carries us onward to the first verse, where guitarist Mike Einziger takes over with a riff that slices through the electronic sounds.
Boyd sounds just as great as ever – I’ve never had complaints about his buttery voice. The man can pull off the funky punk of S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and also the commercial ballads found on Make Yourself like it ain’t no thang. On “Absolution,” however, he pulls off some very difficult runs at the end of the first chorus (about 1:18) that remind me of Mike Patton a bit. (Settle down, I didn’t say Brandon Boyd was as good as Patton. It’s just reminiscent of him, aiiiight?)
But there is LIFE AGAIN in the land of Incubus. By the time Einziger’s solo exploded among a decadent cacophony of sounds, my faith had been restored. Not to mention the passionate vocals in the track’s final chorus (Oh wait, I did just mention it.)
Absolution granted.
