As part of his first-ever solo acoustic tour, Jim Adkins stopped by The Space in Hamden, Conn., giving audience a little bit of everything. Armed with only an acoustic guitar, the Jimmy Eat World singer played solo tunes, band tracks, and even sang some Cyndi Lauper, Magnetic Fields and Rihanna for the sold out crowd, who seemed torn on whether to sing along lest they interrupt the set’s intimate feel.
Adkins joked with the crowd in between songs, telling them that he didn’t know what to expect when he decided to go it alone. Though the crowd didn’t know what to expect either, they seemed game for anything the singer threw their way. The biggest reactions came from “Work,” “Lucky Denver Mint,” and the covers, but other tracks in the set included “Big Casino,” “Chase This Light,” “Ten,” “If You Don’t, Don’t,” “For Me This is Heaven,” and “Damage.”
I can’t even fault him for the glaring omissions of “The Middle,” “Sweetness,” or whatever other Bleed American tracks people might’ve been primed to hear. Knowing my own feelings about those singles, I can only imagine how he feels about them. That said, If you’re a Clarity fan, you probably want to check this show out when it hits your town; the fan-favorite album was definitely well-represented, as evidenced above.
Adkin’s voice is soothing and buttery live, and as any past or present Jimmy Eat World fan knows, the singer’s heartfelt lyrics and delivery easily oozed through to the crowd’s soul last night.
