SNL delivered a somber cold open last night as Kate McKinnon took the stage–donned in her Hillary Clinton character–and performed an emotional rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” (RIP). The opening actually bumped host Dave Chappelle’s monologue to minutes later…a move not often taken by the sketch comedy show.
It’s been a tough week in America for many. Seeing McKinnon’s performance is moving, powerful even. From what I hear (I haven’t caught the rest of the episode…yet), Alec Baldwin’s Trump didn’t make an appearance, which also very much shows SNL‘s cards as to where they stand in our currently heated and hate-filled political climate.
The Cohen song does seem right up Clinton’s alley, with its lyric: “I did my best/It wasn’t much/I couldn’t feel/So I tried to touch/I told the truth/I didn’t come to fool ya.”
When her mock-Clinton finishes up the song, McKinnon stares into the camera and says: “I’m not giving up and neither should you.”
All the feels.
