Remember The A.V. Club’s A. V. Undercover series? The series is still cranking out some of the coolest, most captivating covers ever, and we all know how I feel about cover songs.
This time around, Teri Gender Bender and the rest of Le Butcherettes take on Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” and the result is fierce. (I was even lucky enough to hear this live at the band’s New Haven stop.)
Gender Bender does all of her classic shenanigans here, with blank stares turning to wild, spastic (e)motion; and calming lulls going from 0 to 60 in milliseconds. (She left the fake blood and pig’s head at home. This time.) The garage punks speed up the tempo and ferociously dive head first into this neo-pop classic, giving attitude and edge to the poignant tune.
Plus, what happens between 2:10-2:20 is enough to stoke any pop or punk fan, and if not, you may want to check your pulse.
Turn your speakers up to THRASH and soak in their menacing take. Miley would be pleased:
