Last week, Mates of State played a free show at McLevy Green in Bridgeport, Conn. Towards the end of their set, they covered Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop” and it was EVERYTHING.
We all know how much I love a good cover, right!?
The Mates’ version of that silly-but-fun pop ditty accentuates what Mates of State fans already love about the band. It exemplifies their beautiful harmonies and always-in-synch connection that the husband/wife duo have. Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel together are magical, even moreso when accompanied by a cellist and horn section. Ending with the Miley track was a satisfying finish to an already tasty set full of some of their greatest songs. (The band actually did play one more after – another cover, Tom Waits.)
I thought the song was going to be a live show exclusive, but as it turns out, “We Can’t Stop” was recorded and is now available for your listening and viewing pleasure:
Yes, I certainly hope Miley stops. Forever. But I hope Mates of State keeps playing their lovely Indie Pop from here to eternity, sailing into the sunset of sunny, happy, beautiful pop bliss.

Miley’s Jolene is top notch. Cred where cred is due and shit. But man, do I celebrate The White Stripes’ entire catalogue. Catalog. One of those.
