I can’t believe I’m saying this: I’m super pumped for the new Metallica album.
I mean, I guess I shouldn’t act like that’s a bad thing. It’s not. I just haven’t eagerly anticipated one from these guys in a while. (And I’m not even a St. Anger hater. C’mon people, get over it, already. Embrace the tin.)
Hardwired….to Self-Destruct, the group’s tenth studio album, comes out November 18, and here’s what we know so far.
-The lead single “Hardwired” kicks ass. It’s thrashy, aggressive and has insane drumming. Lars Ulrich might still be a wiener, but dude is doing WORK. The video is below. Check that out maybe.
-Despite some earlier meetings with Rick Rubin (3-4 years ago), the record was produced by Greg Fidelman, who’s worked for Black Sabbath, Adele, The Gossip, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and who formerly did production, engineering and mixing on Metallica and Lou Reed’s Lulu.
-The details for the deluxe edition sound promising! In place of the thirteen originally announced “Riff Origins” tracks, fans will receive “Ronnie Rising Medley” (which the band recorded for the Ronnie James Dio tribute album Ronnie James Dio – This Is Your Life in 2014), covers of Deep Purple’s “When a Blind Man Cries” and Iron Maiden’s “Remember Tomorrow”, and remastered versions of the nine songs they performed live at Record Store Day on April 16, 2016, along with a live version of “Hardwired”. So meaty. (Full tracklistings for CD/digital/vinyl can be found here.)
-This has been the longest gap between records in the band’s entire career. Death Magnetic came out in 2008.
-The band will be hitting the road SOON. Five dates are currently listed for Latin America. Those dates are here. More TBA.
