There are so many new tracks worth mentioning that this week’s Music Monday is a total two-fer! It’s like finding a 1up mushroom and a star in the same screen! Cha-ching.
First up is the new MGMT single “Your Life is a Lie.” The band released the video for the track a couple weeks back. It’s the latest offering we’ve heard off the upcoming self-titled and third release from the psychedelic indie duo that’s due to hit stores September 17th.
The track’s lyrics are super dark set against a poppy, upbeat clamor of cowbells and synths. And the video…you just have to see it. Since Andrew VanWyngarden wrote the song while tripping hard on acid, I guess it makes total sense.
The bonus track this week comes from a ridiculously awesome collaboration of Fishbone and Bad Brains. Angelo Moore of Fishbone joined the hardcore punk Bad Brains for a new version of an older song – “Ragga Dub”. The final result is an amalgamation of reggae and ska – a futuristic feat full of Rasta beats and saxophone sprinkled with punk-dub echoes throughout. It’s heavily instrumental, showcasing a super modern take on the reggae genre. Listen to it over at Rolling Stone.
The original version of “Ragga Dub” can be found on Bad Brains’ 2002 release I & I Survived. The new remix collab will be featured on Dub Rockers Volume 1, a compilation album set to feature famous Jamaican artists and Euro-based reggae acts like Slightly Stoopid, Inner Circle & Capleton, John Brown’s Body, & Peetah Morgan. According to RS, “The album celebrates the lasting impact and evolving sound of reggae music in the 21st century.”
