Earlier this year, soulful R&B mastermind Janelle Monáe announced that her artist collective was teaming with Epic Records for their very own label imprint, Wondaland Records. Monáe and her crew then released some of the year’s best tracks, Monáe’s “Yoga” and Jidenna’s “Classic Man,” and as of today, Wondaland has finally released the roster’s first official collection – Wondaland Presents: The Eephus EP.
The EP combines the aforementioned tracks with new cuts by Deep Cotton, Roman GianArthur and St. Beauty, and every track is as powerful as the disc’s singles. Cotton’s falsetto-filled “Let’s Get Caught” leads the pack with a smooth guitar groove that accompanies its steamy lyrics about getting freaky…and getting caught. The track is another notch in the funk duo’s belt, as they continue to prove that they’re just as eclectic and dynamic as their label leader. Nate ‘Rocket’ Wonder and Chuck Lightning are the mad geniuses behind the sound, and they are killer. Witness more of their rock-hip-hop fusion over at SoundCloud.
Alex Belle and Isis Valentino make up the act that is St. Beauty. Their Eephus track “Going Nowhere” is an airy, timeless, enchanting slow jam that I already have on repeat. The sound is rich and dreamy, and the lyrics are evocative and textured…just like a fairy tale. Swoon to it.
But then again – there is no weak song on the mini-album, which serves as a preview of what’s to come – full-length albums from each of the Wondaland artists. And if you’re curious about what the hell “Eephus” even means – it’s a baseball term used to describe an atypical pitch. As Monáe explained this morning on The Today Show:
“It’s a game changing pitch, and we’ve come to change the game.”
