Danny Elfman is a musical genius. As if that even needed to be said…but just in case you need a reminder, check out the man’s resume. Beyond impressive.
Some of his quirkiest compositions belong to a crazy awesome moviefilm called The Nightmare Before Christmas, which tells the story of Jack Skellington, The Pumpkin King of Halloween Town who decides that he’s a little bored with life…so naturally, he goes all Pilgrims-at-the-first-Thanksgiving on Christmas Town, and shit goes wrong.
Everything about Nightmare is joyous and amazing and you should watch it 10 times in a row. From its amazing stop-motion animations and Elfman’s aforementioned musical genius, to Tim Burton’s dark and creepy vision, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Halloween favorite ’round these parts (aka…my house).
This piano cover perfectly exemplifies the complexities of Elfman’s work. Having played piano as a kid, I dabble on the keys (in a semi-flippant way) and often peruse YouTube tutorials for ideas and songs that I could possibly make sense of. This is not even close to being in my wheelhouse. It’s miles away. My wheelhouse can’t even be seen because it is so, so very far away from this magnificence.
Watch Jamie Crouchman’s cover of “This is Halloween” and bask in his (or her?) excellence.
This cover is SERIOUS.
