Fresh out of last week’s Comic Con comes the trailer for Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, a movie adaptation of the book with the same by Ernest Cline. It’s a total geekfest, plastered with nerdy 80’s references that every pop culture fan will swoon over.

The story follows Wade Watts, a young kid who lives in a dystopian future. He inhabits a place called The Stacks, where he uses a virtual utopia known as OASIS to escape the horrors and poverty around him. He joins an international scavenger hunt in the system to track down three clues left by its founder, a man obsessed with puzzles and pop culture from decades past. Whoever finds the three easter eggs wins control of the entire system and becomes a bajillionaire and gets all the mad propz and such. It’s a world full of video game throwbacks, science fiction fare, and 80’s movies galore. When Wade finds the first clue, he finds himself targeted by other players who are willing to kill to take the ultimate prize of power and fortune.

The book was first released in 2011 and plays out on a tiny screen in your head as you read it. This story was created for the big screen! While it is technically sci-fi and dystopian, don’t let that stop you if that isn’t your bag. Ready Player One is still incredibly accessible even if you’re not into the genre.

The film will star Tye Sheridan (The Tree of Life / X-Men: Apocalypse) as Wade, and Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) as Art3mis. Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One), Mark Rylance (Dunkirk), Simon Pegg (Star Trek, Shaun of the Dead), T.J. Miller (Silicon Valley), and Hannah John-Kamen (Killjoys) also star. It hits theaters March 30, 2018.
